在家排行老三，上二個哥哥，父親奧古斯丁柯波拉﹝August Coppola﹞為文學教授，母親Joy Vogelsang為一名舞蹈家， 在凱吉12歲那年離了婚，之後凱吉便隨者父親遷往舊金山。但凱吉和父親的關係並不好 ，因此凱吉的童年生活並不愉快。
從小凱吉便立志要當一名職業演員。15歲便加入劇團演出電視影集【The Best of Times】。17歲那年即在喜劇片開放的美國學府【Fast Times at Ridgemont High】”中獲得演出機會，但他唯一的一場戲卻被剪掉了。 終於在他叔叔法蘭西斯柯波拉﹝Francis Coppola﹞的“ 鬥 魚【Rumble Fish】”選角試鏡中幫別人對詞而意外地雀屏中選﹝最後一次使用本名Coppola﹞。之後又在【 Valley Girl】裡挑大樑演出主角，才正式打開他漫長的演藝生涯。
從小凱吉的母親就因為憂鬱症和其他的病痛而長年住院，他幾乎是父親一手帶大的。從事文學的父親不斷灌輸他對藝術、文學和戲劇的欣賞能力，因此到了高中時期他就有了許多參與學校舞台劇的經驗。十五歲那年的暑假，凱吉到舊金山參加了一個演藝訓練營，課程結束後他回到洛杉磯，便決定開始他的演藝事業。他參加並通過了高中同等學歷測驗，在高二那年從比佛利山莊高中「畢業」了。
尼可拉斯凱吉的原名是尼可拉斯柯波拉，是著名的導演法蘭西斯柯波拉的姪子。為了走自己的路，他在從影的初期就決定更改名字，從一個漫畫角色選出了「尼可拉斯凱吉」做為藝名。雖然不願沾「柯波拉」這個名字的光，凱吉倒是不介意演出柯波拉導演的電影，而且這些演出都對他幫助甚多。 2007-12-04 02:49:14 補充

his parent divorced . Nicholas relationship with his father was poor. The childhood of Nicolas was unhappy.
As a teenager Cage insisted acting was his career. At the age of 15, he
joined the T.V. series “Fast Time Ridgemont High”which he had a
minute role. Unfortunely, the shot was cut. Francis Ford Coppola, uncle of Cage got a chance for him presented in the series of “ Rumble
Fish” he changed his name from Nicholas Coppola to Nicolas Cage
early in his career. , Later,Cage has appeared in a wide range of films
Nicholas’ mother who suffered from chronic depression and long term in the hospital. His father brought him up while influenced Nicholas the
sense and ability of artisic and literature . The reason Nicholas got
fruitful experiences in stage. At the ageg of 15 summertime, Nicholas
went to San Francisco for the stage performance training. After that back to Los Angeles and started his acting career. He passed the high
school equivalence test and graduated in Beverly Hill High School.
The birth name of Nicolas Cage is Nicholas Kim Coppola, nephew
of famous director Francis Ford Coppola. To fullfill his acting career,
he changed his name started from the Cartoon name Nicolas Cage. He
did not want to be the shadow of his uncle but willing to performs in his
film. All this performance leads Cage in value experiences .
